Britney Spears is facing a criminal charge in California following her arrest last month for allegedly driving under the influence. With the singer’s legal trouble mounting, many are asking: could jail time be on the horizon for the pop star?
The pop icon, 44, was arrested on March 4 after reportedly driving her BMW “erratically at a high rate of speed” on a Southern California highway.
Prosecutors in Ventura County have filed one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Spears was taken into custody following the incident, and it was later revealed that she checked herself into a rehabilitation treatment facility.
Spears’ representatives have called the incident “completely inexcusable,” and the pop star is expected to attend a court arraignment next Monday morning. However, the misdemeanor charge allows her to skip the hearing in person, as this is considered a minor offence.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed the case on Thursday, confirming that such charges typically do not result in jail time, as long as no injuries or crashes occurred. Spears is expected to be offered a plea deal, possibly for a lesser charge of reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs, which could involve 12 months of probation, DUI classes, fines, and fees.
“Whether or not Ms. Spears will appear at the hearing will be a decision made between her and her attorney,” said a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office.
The arrest marks another challenging chapter for Spears, whose tumultuous legal battles have been widely publicized. From being one of the world’s best-selling music artists with hits like Baby One More Time, Toxic, and Womanizer, to enduring a 13-year conservatorship, her life has been marred by controversy.
Following her arrest, Spears’ representatives assured the public that she intends to comply with the law and is taking the necessary steps for rehabilitation. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” they stated.
The singer’s two children will reportedly continue to spend time with her, and her loved ones are said to be developing a plan for her long-term well-being.
