‘It is better to be unemployed in Ghana than to be in America without papers’ – US-based soldier

A Ghanaian military officer based in the United States, identified as Twumasi, has advised Ghanaians planning to travel abroad to avoid using illegal means to migrate.

He said it is better to remain unemployed in Ghana than to travel abroad without valid immigration documents.

According to him, many immigrants living in the United States and other countries face serious challenges because of their undocumented status.

“If you don’t have legal documents and you are living in America or any part of the world, you will suffer…it is better to stay in Ghana without a job or a salary than to live abroad without legal papers,” he said in a self-made video shared on social media on July 14, 2026.

Twumasi explained that many undocumented migrants struggle for years while trying to obtain legal residency.

He added that some people enter into marriages mainly to gain immigration status but later face difficulties in those relationships.

He mentioned the case of a man who allegedly lost his property to his American spouse because he feared the consequences of his immigration situation and could not properly defend his rights.

The officer urged Ghanaians seeking opportunities abroad to use legal migration channels to avoid hardship and uncertainty.
