The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Jigawa State chapter, is urging the state government to introduce a revenue waiver, tax relief, affordable housing and improved welfare packages for doctors to strengthen healthcare delivery.
The appeal came during the Association’s Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting held in Dutse, where more than 200 doctors gathered to discuss practical ways of improving healthcare services across the state.
Chairman of the Association, Dr. Haruna Usman, says the annual conference provides an opportunity for medical professionals to review progress, share knowledge and explore new strategies for improving patient care.
He notes that Jigawa currently has more than 200 medical doctors and says the state has largely avoided the severe brain drain affecting many parts of the country because of government efforts to improve doctors’ welfare. However, he stresses that more support is needed to sustain the gains and attract additional specialists.
The conference, themed “Advancing Evidence-Based Healthcare in Jigawa State Through Strengthened Health Research,” featured presentations by leading medical experts.
Discussions focused on improving research, preventing stroke, strengthening clinical practice and enhancing healthcare services in both rural and urban communities.
Representing the Commissioner for Health, Director of Hospital Services, Dr. Mahmood Abdulwahab, says the Jigawa State Government remains committed to expanding access to quality healthcare.

He highlights ongoing investments, including the construction of a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre in Dutse, a medical oxygen plant, specialised health centres, and the expansion of primary healthcare facilities across all political wards.
He adds that the government is also investing in the training and retraining of healthcare workers while sponsoring Jigawa indigenes to study medicine and other health-related courses to address future manpower needs.
The conference ended with awards presented to outstanding medical professionals in recognition of their contributions to healthcare delivery, as participants renewed their commitment to strengthening evidence-based medical practice for the benefit of residents across Jigawa State.
