The Kano State Government has marked more than 50 properties, including Azman University, in an ongoing enforcement exercise targeting structures suspected to have violated land and building regulations.
The Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dr. Dalhatu Sani, who heads the enforcement committee, said affected property owners have been directed to present valid ownership and approval documents or face legal action.
Sani explained that the operation, tagged “Operation Show Your Document,” is aimed at identifying properties lacking proper documentation as well as structures erected in restricted areas such as under high-tension electricity lines and along drainage channels.
According to him, the enforcement team inspected several locations across the state, including Maiduguri Road, Rijiyar Gwangwan, Ladi Makole and Matar Fada Road, where numerous properties were either sealed or marked for further verification.
“Some of the structures do not have documents to establish ownership, while others were built in prohibited locations such as under the national grid or on waterways. These are considered illegal under existing regulations,” he said.
Sani disclosed that more than 50 properties were marked during Tuesday’s operation alone, stressing that owners who present genuine documentation would be allowed to retain their properties without any penalty.
“If you come forward with authentic documents, you will be allowed to continue your activities. You will not be required to pay any money. However, those who fail to comply will face the full weight of the law,” he stated.
At Azman University, officials marked some structures within the premises but did not shut down the institution, allowing academic activities to continue uninterrupted.
“We did not close the university. Students are still attending classes, but the management has been directed to present all relevant documents for verification,” Sani said.
He added that the university complex includes several other facilities, including a filling station and industrial establishments, all of which would be assessed as part of the verification process.
The KANGIS boss emphasized that the exercise was not targeted at any individual or organisation, insisting that all property owners must comply with the law regardless of their social, political or economic status.
“There is no exemption for anyone in Kano. Every property owner must follow due process and provide the necessary documentation,” he said.
Sani urged residents to cooperate with the authorities, noting that the exercise was designed to promote proper urban planning and orderly development across the state.
“Our goal is to build a more organised and better-planned Kano for the benefit of all residents,” he added.
