The Kano State Chairman of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Hussaini Isah Mairiga, has said the party has resolved its internal crisis following a meeting with the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to the Chairman, the meeting was held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Mairiga disclosed this in an interview with SolaceBase on Wednesday, stating that the intervention of party leaders helped to restore unity after tensions within the Kano chapter.
The crisis, which preceded the Abuja meeting, was triggered by Kwankwaso’s recent defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after a prolonged internal dispute that threatened the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His subsequent entry into the NDC, alongside his political structure, raised concerns within the Kano leadership of the party.
Mairiga had feared that Kwankwaso’s influence and established Kwankwasiyya network could dominate the party’s structure in the state, potentially displacing the existing leadership.

he situation created tension among members and necessitated intervention from the party’s national leadership, leading to the Abuja reconciliation meeting.
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Mairiga said the parties involved agreed to put aside their differences in the interest of unity and electoral success.
“You know that some crisis arose between members of the Nigerian Democratic Congress and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso after he came into the party,” he said, noting that the disagreement had posed a challenge to the party’s cohesion.
He added that the realisation of the implications of the crisis prompted stakeholders to seek resolution. “Later, we realised that this crisis would not take us to victory,” he said.
According to him, leaders of the party at the national level stepped in to mediate, leading to a successful outcome.
He said the meeting provided an avenue for all sides to air their concerns and reach a common understanding.
“Our leaders from Abuja followed us, and we went there and resolved all our problems,” Mairiga stated.
Clarifying the current arrangement, he said Kwankwaso remains the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, while he continues to serve as the NDC chairman in Kano, adding that both sides have agreed to work together.

He further stated that members of the party in the state have accepted the new arrangement and are now united ahead of the elections.
Mairiga also disclosed that the party is aligning behind a joint political ambition, expressing confidence in their preparedness.
“All members are now working together to ensure success,” he said, adding that preparations would commence in earnest upon his return to Kano.
“We will start full preparations for the success of Obi as president and Kwankwaso as vice president,” he added.
