The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting circular economy practices and strengthening sustainable renewable energy waste management through strategic partnerships with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the European Union (EU), the Federal Ministry of Environment, and other development partners.
The commitment was made by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, during the opening of the State-Level Capacity Building Training on the National Data Monitoring System for Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment (OGREE) Waste Management holding in Kano on Monday.
SolaceBase reports that the two-day training programme brought together representatives of the Federal Ministry of Environment, UNIDO, the European Union, the African Battery Recycling and Recovery Initiative (ARBR), participating states, technical experts and other stakeholders to strengthen institutional capacity for the safe management of renewable energy waste and improve environmental data systems.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Hashim stressed that while the transition to renewable energy remains essential for sustainable development, proper management of end-of-life renewable energy equipment must become a priority.
According to him, the success of clean energy adoption should not be measured only by the number of solar systems installed but also by how effectively governments and institutions manage the entire lifecycle of such technologies.

He explained that the state government has intensified efforts to strengthen environmental governance through climate-related policies, legal reforms, digital environmental monitoring systems and investments in waste management and ecosystem restoration.
The commissioner disclosed that Kano has set a target of planting 10 million trees this year as part of efforts to improve environmental sustainability and address climate-related challenges.
He further highlighted ongoing initiatives by the state government, including the revitalisation of public green spaces, modernisation of waste management through colour-coded waste segregation systems and improved sanitation equipment, as well as the revival of the Dorayi Compost Plant.
Dr. Hashim also revealed plans to establish a Circular Economy Industrial Cluster in Gabasawa, describing it as one of Nigeria’s largest integrated circular economy hubs aimed at promoting recycling, resource efficiency and green industrial growth.

He noted that Kano remains ready to deepen collaboration with UNIDO, the EU and other partners in areas of circular economy development, recycling infrastructure, digital environmental monitoring and renewable energy waste management.
The commissioner said the state’s consistent political commitment, institutional preparedness and policy direction position Kano to emerge as a leading demonstration state for circular economy implementation in Northern Nigeria and across the country.
He urged participants at the training to use the opportunity to build partnerships and convert knowledge into practical solutions that would strengthen environmental institutions and support Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
