Bandits have abducted former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd.), and his wife along the Katsina-Matazu axis in Katsina State.
According to reports, the retired senior military officer and his wife were travelling to Katsina on Saturday when heavily armed gunmen intercepted their vehicle in Matazu Local Government Area and whisked them away to an unknown destination.
The driver of the vehicle was also attacked but managed to escape despite suffering a gunshot injury.
According to reports, the vehicle used by the retired general, a red Peugeot 604, was later found and has been taken to the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters.
The incident has heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of the North-West, particularly in Katsina State, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes continue to pose serious threats to residents and travellers.

Major General Abubakar, who served as Director of Defence Information during his military career, is widely known for his role as the spokesperson of the Nigerian Armed Forces and his contributions to national security communication.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement regarding the abduction or ongoing rescue efforts.
However, sources indicated that security operatives have commenced investigations aimed at securing the safe release of the victims and apprehending the perpetrators.
The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges confronting Nigeria despite ongoing military operations against criminal groups across the country.
