The Kebbi Government says it has spent N7.13 billion on the supply and installation of solar-powered streetlights in the last three years to enhance security and strengthen urban infrastructure.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hayatuddeen Ahmad-Bawa, disclosed this on Monday in Birnin Kebbi during an inter-ministerial press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information and Culture.
Mr Ahmad-Bawa said the briefing was to update the public on key achievements of the All Progressives Congress, APC-led administration of Gov. Nasir Idris in the past three years.
He explained that the investment covered the procurement and installation of more than 3,000 double-arm solar streetlight systems across Birnin Kebbi and other major towns in the state.
According to him, the intervention is part of a broader infrastructure agenda to modernise urban centres and improve residents’ quality of life.
“In Birnin Kebbi, major routes such as Khalifa Roundabout–Takalau, Haliru Abdu Roundabout–Guruza, and AP2 Roundabout–NNPC Roundabout have been fully illuminated.
“Other benefiting areas include GRA, Gesse Phase I, Gulumbe Road, Badariya, as well as community centres and traditional institutions across the state,” he said.
The commissioner added that similar projects had been executed in Zuru, Argungu, Yauri, Augie, Bunza and Koko/Besse, noting that the programme was ongoing with plans for further expansion.
He said the initiative had improved security, stimulated night-time economic activities and enhanced the state’s aesthetic outlook.
Mr Ahmad-Bawa also listed other ministry’s achievements, including construction and rehabilitation of township roads, interlocking works, kerb realignment along major corridors, and installation of critical urban infrastructure.
He disclosed that the government had approved large-scale drainage clearance in Birnin Kebbi to tackle perennial flooding, alongside monthly refuse evacuation across the state.
“To ensure operational efficiency, approval was granted for the repair of KUDA trucks and payloaders, in addition to sustained funding for sanitation activities,” he said.
The commissioner noted that daily sanitation of major roads had significantly improved environmental cleanliness in the state capital.
He further revealed that key roundabouts, including Khalifa, Yar Yara, Plus Centre and Kawara, had been renovated, while a new city gate was constructed at Kofa Sabuwa.
Other interventions, he said, included asphalt works at Kawara Roundabout, drainage expansion at Bayan Kara, and installation of solar streetlights in Ruggar Fulani and adjoining communities.
Mr Ahmad-Bawa added that digital display screens had been installed at Sir Yahaya Roundabout, Ahmadu Bello Way and the Government House gate to enhance public communication.
He reaffirmed the Idris administration’s commitment to sustained infrastructure development and urged residents to support government efforts to transform the state.
