According to a video posted on Sky News, on Sunday June 28, 2026, Iranian activist Omid Vahidi said the Trump administration made a serious error by signing a memorandum of understanding with Iran, arguing that the move only gave a struggling regime a way to survive when it was already on the verge of collapse.
Speaking on the program, Vahidi was asked whether the deal, which he described as “a deal to make a deal,” had given Iran new control over the Strait of Hormuz too quickly.
He responded by pointing out that Iran’s military strength, including its navy and air force, had already been severely weakened before the agreement was signed.
He said the regime was under heavy economic pressure and lacked the support of its own people, which made it illegitimate in his view.
Vahidi expressed confusion over why the United States chose to pursue the memorandum at this stage, suggesting it was unclear what Iran’s leadership hoped to gain from it.
He warned that the agreement simply bought the regime more time, time he believes will be used to rebuild rather than reform.
In his words, Omid Vahidi said, “So that’s a very good question. You said it very well. So, it’s a deal to make a deal, and it was a big mistake.
“They are just throwing a lifeline to the regime that was already done. So the whole navy, the whole air force, everything was done. It was under a lot of economic pressure.
“They don’t have the backing of the people. They’re not legitimate enough, and they were done,” he said.
He added that he did not understand the administration’s reasoning behind the shift, calling the memorandum “ludicrous” and stressing that Iran’s government has a long history of breaking its promises.
