Lamido Abubakar Yuguda is a famous Nigerian economist, banker, and financial regulator who served as Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2020 to 2024 before being named Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in March 2026.

The Senate has confirmed Lamido Yuguda’s nomination as deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as well as the appointment of Peggy Onwu as an independent director on the board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

Lamido Yuguda graduated from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria with a B.Sc. in accounting in 1983. In 1991, he continued his studies at the University of Birmingham in England, where he earned an M.Sc. in money, banking, and finance.

He also holds a certificate in financial asset management and engineering from the Swiss Finance Institute in Geneva, Switzerland.

Career

Lamido Yuguda, the previous Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, took over this position after being appointed by Muhammadu Buhari. He held this office from 2020 to 2024.

He was a former director of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Lamido Yuguda worked in several departments at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) before becoming a director, including Director of the Reserve Management Department from 2010 to 2016, Senior Supervisor, Foreign Operations Department in 1984, Banking Supervision Department in 1985, and so on.

Lamido Yuguda began working as an economist in the Africa Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC, in 1997.

President Tinubu recommended him for CBN Deputy Governor in March 2026, subject to Senate confirmation, citing his long-term influence on national economic strategy. He has also served on the boards of the African Finance Corporation (AFC) and the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).

On Tuesday, April 29, 2026, the Senate confirmed Mr. Lamido Abubakar Yuguda’s appointment as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The legislators referred to the appointment as “a square peg in a square hole”.
