A new and controversial trend has taken over Ghanaian TikTok, with users going live to bathe, though fully clothed, in a bid to attract gifts from viewers.
Videos circulating on the platform show creators, among them a young woman filmed lathering herself with a sponge while dressed in her regular clothing, performing the routine live to draw attention and encourage viewers to send virtual gifts, which can later be converted into money.
The trend has triggered a wave of reactions online, with many Ghanaians questioning the lengths some creators are willing to go to monetize their content.
“How on earth will you bath on your live all in the name of receiving gifts,” one user remarked in a widely shared reaction video, capturing the mixed amusement and criticism trailing the trend.
While the woman in the viral clip remained fully clothed throughout, critics argue the stunt reflects a broader, concerning pattern in which creators adopt increasingly attention-grabbing gimmicks to stand out in TikTok’s competitive live-streaming space, where gifting is central to a creator’s earnings.
Supporters of such content, however, maintain it is harmless entertainment and a legitimate hustle, arguing that creators are simply finding creative ways to engage audiences within the platform’s rules.
