A truck driver who was reportedly found heavily intoxicated has been stopped at the Nkawkaw Bypass in the Eastern Region after raising concerns about road safety.
According to reports, the driver was intercepted by the Nkawkaw Branch Chairman of the Ghana Highways Drivers Cooperative, who noticed that he was not in a suitable condition to continue his journey.
The chairman is said to have taken the driver’s vehicle keys from him and prevented him from driving further while intoxicated.
He reportedly asked the driver to rest and sleep until he had recovered before allowing him to continue his trip.
The action has received praise from some members of the public, with many commending the chairman for taking a proactive step that may have prevented a serious road accident.
Driving under the influence of alcohol remains one of the major causes of road crashes, with authorities and road safety advocates repeatedly warning drivers against getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
Many social media users have also called on transport unions and drivers’ associations to continue monitoring their members and taking action against unsafe practices on the roads.
