A JHS graduate has broken down in tears after being placed in Agogo State College, her sixth-choice school, despite obtaining an impressive aggregate of 15 in her Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
In a video that has since circulated online, the visibly emotional student explained her frustration, pointing out that her academic performance outshone that of a friend who, despite scoring lower, was placed in Opoku Ware School, one of the more sought-after institutions on many students’ priority lists.
For her, the disparity in placement outcomes, despite the difference in results, has been difficult to come to terms with.
Her story has struck a chord with many Ghanaians online, reigniting long-standing frustrations with the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), which continues to place some high-performing students in schools far down their list of choices while others with comparatively lower grades secure spots in more competitive institutions.
Social media users have flooded the comments with similar stories of their own, with many calling on the Ghana Education Service to review how placements are determined and to bring greater transparency to a process that continues to leave many bright students feeling shortchanged.
Under the current rule implemented by the Ghana Education Service, it’s forbidden to explore seld placement options when you have already been placed in a school.
