The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed all branches to suspend their ongoing strike effective May 11, 2026.
The JAC disclosed that the decision follows a renewed agreement reached after a series of meetings between the unions and the federal government’s expanded renegotiation committee led by former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed.
The unions had embarked on strike action on May 1, citing the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and present a revised offer on allowances. They also criticised the slow pace of talks, which they said fell short of expectations.
However, in a circular issued on Wednesday and jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the committee confirmed that branches nationwide have been instructed to call off the strike from May 11.

The unions said the federal government has committed to concluding all outstanding renegotiations within two weeks of the suspension.
“The leadership of JAC considered the passionate appeal for the suspension of the ongoing strike and secured a commitment from the Federal Government’s Expanded Renegotiation Committee that all renegotiations, including a reviewed CONTISS offer, will be concluded within two weeks,” they stated.
Branch leaders were also urged to convene meetings to brief members and ensure compliance with the directive, while engagement with relevant stakeholders continues.
The unions also commended members for their unity and adherence to the strike directive, describing the nationwide solidarity as encouraging.
