NELFUND cautions institutions against withholding students’ fee refunds

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, has raised concerns over reports that some tertiary institutions are failing to refund students whose tuition fees had been paid before the Fund’s disbursement, while others have allegedly imposed arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges.

The Fund condemned such actions, describing them as contrary to the objectives of the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme, which was established to remove financial barriers to higher education rather than create additional financial burdens for students.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND disclosed that it has begun engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive due refunds.

The Fund also stressed the need for institutions to maintain fair, transparent and accountable fee structures that align with the objectives of the scheme.

NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of student beneficiaries and preserving the integrity of the Student Loan Scheme, describing it as a landmark intervention of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at expanding access to tertiary education across the country.
