Nigeria says it is expanding its relationship with Poland to support economic growth and increase cooperation in key sectors.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, announced this after meeting Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, in Abuja on May 21, 2026.
According to her, Nigeria and Poland have maintained good diplomatic relations since 1962 and are now working to improve cooperation in areas such as education, trade, technology, security, and investment.
She said education remains an important part of the relationship, noting that many Nigerians have studied in Polish universities through exchange programmes. She also appreciated Poland for assisting Nigerian students affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu explained that both countries discussed new opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation, cybersecurity, maritime security, defence, infrastructure, tourism, and cultural exchange.
She added that Nigeria’s economic reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda are helping improve the business environment and attract more foreign investment, including from Polish companies.
The minister said around 6,000 Nigerians currently live in Poland and that stronger people-to-people connections will continue to support bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister described Nigeria as one of Africa’s major economic and technology centres and expressed interest in deeper cooperation.
He said Polish companies are looking to expand into Nigeria’s digital and infrastructure sectors and encouraged Nigerian businesses to explore opportunities in Poland.
Nigeria said both countries will continue to strengthen political, economic, and technological partnerships in the future.
