Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have renewed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation and expanding collaboration in defence and security.
The development followed a courtesy visit by the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, to the Defence Headquarters on Wednesday.
According to a statement by the Director, Defence Information, Maj-Gen Samaila Uba, the visit provided an opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their commitment to deepening military-to-military relations and identify additional areas of mutual interest.
Receiving the ambassador, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, welcomed the visit and expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for its longstanding relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The CDS emphasised the need to sustain and expand existing channels of cooperation, particularly in areas that would strengthen the professional capacity and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The ambassador, in his remarks, expressed Saudi Arabia’s desire to further strengthen its relationship with Nigeria, describing the country as an “important partner in Africa.”
Al-Balawi also reaffirmed the Kingdom’s readiness to support closer engagement between both countries, particularly in the defence and security sectors.
Both sides acknowledged that stronger institutional and professional ties between their armed forces would contribute to improved cooperation in addressing common security challenges.
The CDS thanked the Saudi government for its continued goodwill towards Nigeria and expressed optimism that the discussions would result in tangible areas of cooperation.
The Defence Headquarters said the engagement underscored the commitment of both countries to strengthening their bilateral partnership and advancing shared interests in “peace, security and stability.”
