The Unveiling African Parliament Writers Network has honoured Dr Okeoma Aguocha, ACIB, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Navy Microfinance Bank, with the prestigious African Trailblazers Excellence Merit Award for Outstanding Leadership in Innovative Microfinance Banking.
The Network, which comprises journalists from print, electronic and digital media across six African countries, recognises leaders advancing visionary policy, innovation and public service. The 2026 edition of the African Legislative Excellence Merit Awards highlights chief executives and administrators promoting people-centred development in collaboration with parliamentary initiatives within the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
Under Dr Aguocha’s stewardship, the bank has grown into a microfinance powerhouse, recording a 150 per cent increase in loan disbursements to more than 50,000 underserved clients within three years. Fintech innovations—including mobile applications supported by blockchain security and artificial-intelligence credit scoring—have reduced default rates by 40 per cent, expanded access in rural communities and increased the bank’s assets to ₦20 billion. Notably, 60 per cent of the loans support women entrepreneurs, in alignment with broader African development priorities.
A respected voice in sustainable microfinance policy, Dr Aguocha’s contributions continue to shape Nigeria’s financial regulatory landscape, reflecting a strong commitment to inclusive development.
Reacting to the honour, Dr Aguocha said:
“This recognition strengthens our resolve to democratise access to finance for Nigeria’s underserved populations. Through fintech innovation and inclusive strategies, we have empowered more than 50,000 lives—including rural communities, naval families and women entrepreneurs—and we remain committed to expanding this impact.”
