Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Portugal, Erelu Angela Adebayo, has taken a major step towards commencing her diplomatic assignment with the presentation of copies of her letters of credence to Portuguese authorities.
Adebayo presented the documents to Ambassador Francisco Ribeiro Telles, Secretary-General of Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a statement issued by the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
The ministry said the presentation of the copies d’usage formally begins the ambassador-designate’s diplomatic engagement with the Portuguese government ahead of the submission of her full letters of credence to the President of Portugal.

“Her Excellency, Erelu Angela Adebayo, Ambassador-Designate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Portugal, today formally presented copies of her Letters of Credence (copies d’usage) to Ambassador Francisco Ribeiro Telles, the Secretary-General of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the statement said.
The ministry described the event as a significant diplomatic milestone before Adebayo’s formal recognition as Nigeria’s envoy to Portugal.
“The presentation marks an important diplomatic milestone preceding the formal presentation of her Letters of Credence to H.E. Antonio Jose Seguro, the President of the Portuguese Republic,” it added.
The presentation of letters of credence is a key diplomatic procedure through which an ambassador-designate is officially introduced to the host country before assuming full ambassadorial duties.
