The Director of the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, Bayero University Kano, Professor Habu Mohammed Fagge, has expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the country may face disappointment due to the absence of a credible alternative to the incumbent administration.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with SolaceBase, Fagge said the political environment and the ongoing recruitment process within political parties have failed to produce candidates capable of inspiring confidence among Nigerians.
According to him, the economic hardship experienced by citizens since the 2023 elections, coupled with rising inflation and widespread poverty, has created deep dissatisfaction among the electorate. However, he noted that the current political process appears unlikely to provide voters with a convincing alternative.

“The 2027 election is going to be a very serious electoral process that may ultimately result in disappointment and frustration for many Nigerians,” he said.
Fagge argued that weaknesses in the electoral process and internal party politics could pave the way for the return of incumbents despite growing public discontent. He warned that such an outcome could further deepen public disillusionment and erode confidence in democratic institutions.
The political scientist noted that many Nigerians have lost trust in political leaders due to unfulfilled campaign promises, worsening economic conditions and persistent insecurity.
He added that unless political parties reform their candidate selection processes and provide credible choices for voters, the country risks entering another cycle of political frustration and declining public confidence in governance.
