The actress, who is well-known for portraying the contentious “Mama Monica” character, stated in an interview with Yanga FM on Tuesday that her compensation was a reflection of the film’s popularity.
Monica went over a million. For Monica II, it exceeded one million. It’s more than a million dollars, but I don’t want to call it anything else,” she stated.
Onwukwe also talked about how she landed the part, saying that she was contacted out of the blue and had to carefully read the screenplay before assuming the role.
“I began considering how I would make the character come to life. She said, “I had to write a backstory for her.”
The actress claims that long before production started, she mentally prepared herself for the part, which enabled her to provide the emotionally charged “Mama Monica” performance that has sparked internet discussions.
With millions of views on YouTube, Uche Montana’s film Monica has become one of Nollywood’s biggest releases of 2026.
Viewers’ reactions to the film, which centers on family conflicts and the difficulties experienced by a firstborn daughter, have been overwhelming, with many appreciating Onwukwe’s realistic portrayal of the cunning mother figure.
