Oil, Quad, defence: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to arrive in India today, what’s on agenda?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to arrive in India on Saturday for a four-day diplomatic visit, with Kolkata as the first stop. The visit is being seen as both politically and historically significant, especially as it comes shortly after the BJP formed a government in West Bengal.

Rubio’s visit marks the first time in 14 years that a US Secretary of State will travel to Kolkata. The last such visit was by Hillary Clinton in May 2012, when she met then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the historic Writers’ Buildings. That meeting came soon after Banerjee ended the Left Front’s 34-year rule in the state, making the timing of Rubio’s visit similarly noteworthy.

Why is Marco Rubio visiting Kolkata first?

According to reports, Rubio will arrive in Kolkata from Sweden early in the morning and is expected to visit Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. His choice of Kolkata highlights the city’s long-standing diplomatic ties with the United States and its growing importance in regional geopolitics.

Kolkata is home to one of the oldest American consular establishments in the world and the first in India. The US diplomatic presence in the city dates back to 1792, when George Washington appointed Benjamin Joy as the first American Consul to Kolkata.

What makes this visit diplomatically significant?

Rubio’s India tour from May 23 to 26 will also include Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. Experts believe that the inclusion of Kolkata signals a renewed US focus on eastern and northeastern India.

The US Consulate in Kolkata currently oversees American interests across 11 states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and others in the northeast. This makes the city strategically important for expanding diplomatic and economic engagement in the region.

Is there a larger geopolitical message?

Observers say the visit comes at a time when the US is looking to strengthen partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region amid global uncertainty, particularly due to ongoing tensions in West Asia. By starting his India visit in Kolkata, Rubio may be underlining the region’s rising importance in global strategy.
