Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has commended President Bola Tinubu for ordering an emergency intervention on the Benin-Asaba Road, saying the move will bring relief to motorists, commuters and communities affected by the prolonged gridlock and poor condition of the highway.
Okpebholo, in a post on X on Thursday, said he was aware of the hardship residents and road users had endured along the 125-kilometre corridor, including the impact on families, businesses and communities.
“For a while now, I know the pain our people have endured on the Benin–Asaba Road. I have seen the gridlock, heard the frustrations of motorists and commuters, and understood the toll this situation has taken on families, businesses and communities,” he said.
The governor said the President’s directive had renewed hope, expressing appreciation to Tinubu for responding to concerns over the condition of the critical highway.
“Today, we have renewed hope. President Bola Tinubu has ordered an emergency intervention on the 125km corridor, and on behalf of the people of Edo, I sincerely thank Mr. President for listening to our concerns and acting decisively,” Okpebholo said.
He also commended the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for his commitment to restoring the road.

Okpebholo said he had directed contractors involved in the intervention to ensure quality work, comply with approved specifications and meet the agreed completion timeline.
“I have charged the contractors to deliver quality work, adhere strictly to approved specifications and complete the emergency works within the agreed timeframe,” he said.

The governor said the prolonged hardship on the road had lasted too long and expressed hope that the intervention would improve movement between Edo, Delta and other parts of the country.
“The hardship has gone on for too long. This intervention must bring meaningful relief to our people and restore safe, easier movement between Edo, Delta and other parts of the country,” he said.
The Federal Ministry of Works had earlier directed the immediate deployment of contractors to the three sections of the Benin-Asaba Federal Road to restore failed portions and ease the suffering of road users. The ministry also said the entire route would be redesigned for reconstruction with reinforced concrete pavement.
