The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has warned masquerades and their followers to avoid any form of violence during the upcoming Egungun Festival, which begins on Monday in Ibadan.
In a statement released on Sunday through his media aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, the monarch said anyone found causing trouble during the festival will face punishment according to the law.
The Egungun Festival is a traditional Yoruba celebration held across South-West Nigeria. It is used to honour ancestors and celebrate cultural heritage through masquerade displays, drumming, dancing, and other traditional activities.
The Olubadan stressed that the festival must not be used for fighting, settling personal disputes, or rivalry among masquerades or groups.
He explained that the festival is meant to promote unity, family bonding, and respect for tradition. It also allows people to reflect on their history and celebrate their culture with joy and entertainment.
Oba Ladoja added that arrangements have been made with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and smooth celebration this year.
He urged residents to cooperate with security officials and follow all movement rules during the festival. He also warned that anyone who disobeys the rules will face consequences.
