The organisers of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have postponed the 2026 event by one week. It will now take place on May 30 instead of May 23.

The organisers, Pamodzi Sports Marketing, said the change will give them more time to improve arrangements and ensure a safer and smoother race for runners and spectators.

They explained that the extra time will help them upgrade important areas such as medical services, security, and facilities for people watching along the route.

Race Director Zack Amodu said the decision was not because of any problem but to make the event better.

He added that the race’s medical director recently completed a World Athletics certification programme in Madrid.

This makes the Okpekpe race the first in Nigeria to have a certified medical director, raising its standard.

The Okpekpe Road Race is a World Athletics Gold Label event and is one of the top road races in Africa.

It was also the first in Nigeria and West Africa to receive this recognition.

Organisers said the new date will help improve the quality and success of the event.
