Doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) in Kwara State have suspended their services after one of their colleagues was allegedly assaulted by a woman who lost her child at the hospital.
The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday at the hospital’s Pediatrics Department. According to reports, the grieving mother became emotional after the loss of her child and allegedly attacked a doctor involved in the case.
On Thursday, many patients who arrived at the hospital early in the morning were unable to receive medical attention as doctors stayed away from work in protest.
Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) staged a peaceful protest within the hospital premises, condemning the attack and calling for better protection of healthcare workers. They also appealed to members of the public to stop assaulting medical personnel while seeking medical services.
Speaking during the protest, the doctors’ spokesperson, Dr E. Oladepo, described the incident as one of several attacks on healthcare workers at the hospital. He said such actions were unacceptable and urged the public to show understanding and respect for medical professionals.
