The Oyo State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has unveiled an agenda centred on Local Government autonomy, education reform, improved healthcare and workers’ welfare ahead of the 2027 election.
Alli made the promises on Tuesday at a high-powered dialogue on the future of Oyo State organised by the Oyo Rising Citizens Forum (ORCF) at an event centre in Ibadan.
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would grant full autonomy to the 33 Local Governments from May 29, 2027.
“My administration will not spend one kobo belonging to Local Governments. They will build their schools, build their health centres and employ their own workers. That era of stifling the councils is over,” he said.
On education, Alli promised to reduce classroom sizes to a maximum of 30 pupils, saying the policy would improve learning outcomes and create employment opportunities for teachers and graduates.
He also pledged to allocate at least 18 per cent of the state’s annual budget to education, in line with the UNESCO benchmark he cited, while prioritising teacher training and recruitment.
In the health sector, the APC candidate promised to establish a functional general hospital in each of the state’s 33 Local Government Areas and at least one fully equipped primary healthcare centre in each of the 351 wards.
He further said he would facilitate and commission at least three fully equipped health centres across Oyo South Senatorial District before the election and hand them over to the state government.
On the controversial Ibadan Circular Road project, Alli promised to act within his first 72 hours in office if elected.
“I will set up a committee within 48 to 72 hours to address the grievances of all affected residents. We will not seize people’s land and we will not sell state assets,” he said.
Alli also promised to pay workers’ salaries, pensions and gratuities promptly, while introducing a 13th-month salary for civil servants.
To boost the state’s economy, he said his administration would focus on agriculture and mining, establish at least one cottage industry in each Local Government Area and provide parabolic dryers across Ibarapa and the three senatorial districts.
He also pledged to revive the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), expand vocational and political opportunities for youths and increase women’s participation in government through key appointments.
Participants at the interactive session questioned the candidate on electricity supply, alleged sale of state properties, welfare of doctors and revolving loans for traders, among other issues. Alli responded with policy proposals across the sectors.
