The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspect linked to alleged threats to kidnap and kill a 50-year-old resident of Seni Salla Village, Saki, and members of his family.
The suspect, identified as Hantsi Abdullahi of Boseperu, Kosubosu, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, was arrested while attempting to withdraw money allegedly demanded from the victim.
The Command said the victim, Metu Jilani, reported the matter to the police on September 19, 2026, after receiving threatening calls from unknown persons on September 13.
According to the police, the callers claimed they had been contracted to kidnap and kill Jilani and his family, warning that fleeing would lead to the abduction of his younger brother.
The suspects allegedly demanded ₦3 million from the victim and instructed him to sell his two houses and transfer the proceeds into an account belonging to a Point-of-Sale operator, Muhydeen Salihu, in Gwasoro Village, Kwara State.
Rather than pay the full amount, Jilani transferred ₦100,000 into the designated account, which the police said provided an investigative lead.
On September 18, two men, Abdullahi and Hantsi Liman, allegedly went to the POS operator to withdraw the money.
The police said Abdullahi was arrested during the attempt, while Liman escaped.
The arrested suspect was subsequently attacked by an angry mob before police operatives intervened and took him to hospital, where he remains on admission.
The Command said efforts were ongoing to arrest Liman and establish the identities and roles of other persons who may be connected with the alleged threats.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, directed a thorough investigation and ordered sustained efforts to apprehend all suspects linked to the case.
The Command also urged residents to promptly report threats, suspicious movements and other actionable information to the police.
