Parents and staff of Federal Government Girls College, Calabar, have protested the reported plan to hand over the management of King’s College, Lagos, to its Old Boys Association under a 35-year concession.
The protesters gathered at the school gate, displaying placards and chanting solidarity songs against the concession. Some parents who arrived with boarding students ahead of the new academic session said they were stopped from entering the premises.
The Joint Congress of Unions of the Federal Ministry of Education has also rejected the concession, directing that the first-term session in more than 100 Federal Unity Colleges should not begin until further notice.
In a communiqué issued after an emergency virtual meeting, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria described the decision as unilateral, saying key stakeholders were not adequately consulted.
All Federal Unity Colleges are expected to resume on Monday, September 14.
