PDP Faction Meets Jonathan Amid 2027 Speculation

The Tanimu Turaki-led factional national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday held a strategic meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan.

NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the meeting came less than 48 hours after Jonathan disclosed that he was consulting widely on the possibility of contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan had made the remark on Thursday while addressing a group of Nigerians who visited his office in Abuja to urge him to join the presidential race.

The former president told the group that contesting for the presidency was a serious decision that required broad consultations.

He said, “You are asking me to come and contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely.”

Meanwhile, there is a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the suit was filed by a lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to seek the presidency again.

On April 28, the presiding judge, Justice Peter Lifu, ordered that hearing notices be issued and served on the defendants.

Jideobi prayed the court to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
