Peter Obi Graces NPFL Clash As Ikorodu City Beat Rangers

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, was among the spectators at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Sunday as Ikorodu City secured a 2-0 victory over Enugu Rangers in an NPFL Matchday Six fixture.

Obi watched the encounter from the stands alongside Ikorodu City President, Sanmi Doherty, as the Lagos-based side defeated the reigning league champions. The fixture was listed by the Nigeria Premier Football League as a Matchday Six game at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

Images and videos from the stadium showed the former Anambra State governor following the action and engaging with people around him. He was also approached by fans seeking photographs during the half-time interval.

Ikorodu City also shared the moment on its X handle with the caption “Live at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena to witness the beauty of the ‘NPFL—Nigeria Premiere Football League.’ Ikorodu City plays host to Rangers in #NPFL27 | Match Day 6. Welcome to Lagos, @PeterObi.”

On the pitch, Ikorodu City took the lead in the eighth minute through Aderemi Adeoye before Ikechukwu Junior extended the advantage in the 63rd minute to complete the 2-0 win.

The victory handed Ikorodu City all three points in a fixture against Rangers, who had entered the game in strong form after victories over Kun Khalifat and Ranchers Bees in their previous league outings.

Obi’s appearance comes as political parties and their candidates continue preparations ahead of the 2027 general election. The Nigeria Democratic Congress had earlier announced that Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were authorised to nominate key officials for the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
