South Korea has listed seven conditions foreigners must meet before applying for citizenship through general naturalisation.
This route mainly covers foreigners who have never held Korean citizenship and have no family relationship with a South Korean citizen.
According to information reviewed by Ibynews.com, the rules come from Article 5 of South Korea’s Nationality Act.
The seven requirements are:
- Live in South Korea for at least five continuous years
Applicants must have legally lived in the country for more than five years. Long periods spent outside South Korea may affect how the residence period is counted.
- Hold permanent resident status
Applicants must have permanent residency in South Korea before applying through this route.
- Be legally recognised as an adult
The applicant must have reached adulthood under South Korean civil law.
- Show good behaviour
Applicants must obey South Korean laws and meet the conduct standards set by the Ministry of Justice. Criminal records and immigration violations may affect an application.
- Prove financial stability
Applicants must show that they can support themselves through their income, skills or assets. They may also qualify if they live with family members who can support them.
- Understand the Korean language and culture
Applicants need basic Korean language skills. They must also understand the country’s customs, culture and way of life.
- Pass security and public interest checks
The Minister of Justice must be satisfied that granting citizenship will not threaten national security, public order or public welfare.
Meeting these requirements allows a foreigner to apply. It does not guarantee that the government will approve the application.
Different rules apply to people married to South Korean citizens, former Korean nationals and people with Korean family connections.
Applicants should confirm their eligibility through South Korea’s official immigration portal before submitting an application.
