Amid US President Donald Trump’s claims about alleged Iranian plot to assassinate him, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has vowed to avenge the killing of his father and predecessor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stating that vengeance must “inevitably be carried out”, regardless of whether he or other senior Iranian officials are alive or not.
Mojtaba Khamenei vows vengeance for Ali Khamenei killing
In a message on the funeral of Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei vowed that those who killed his father and other martyrs will not escape justice.
“We pledge to avenge your pure blood and that of all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and dishonourable murderers. This revenge is the will of our nation and must be carried out without fail,” Khamenei said, adding that those responsible “will take with them to their graves the wish for a peaceful death in bed”.
The 56-year-old cleric who was appointed Iran’s new Supreme Leader after his father Ali Khamenei and other family members, including his wife and 14-month-old niece, Zahra, were assassinated in a February 28 US-Israeli strike, said Iran’s vengeance does not rely on any single individual or official.

“They should know that this matter does not depend on the existence of me or other officials. Whether we are there or not, this will be accomplished, and soon every free person around the world will fulfil a part of this divine mission,” he added.
Trump claims Iran plotting to assassinate him
The Iranian Supreme Leader’s pledge for retribution comes amid Trump claiming that Iran is planning to assassinate him, and he has been on Tehran’s “list” for a long time.
“I’ve been on their list for a long time. That’s what we’re dealing with… The only thing is, I’ve left instructions, if anything happens, to just literally bomb them at levels that they’ve never seen before,” Trump told the New York Post.
Asked about a new alleged Iranian plot to assassinate him that Israel has allegedly discovered, Trump said there were no new plans, but claimed that Iran has wanted him dead for years, and that he has been “number 1” on Tehran’s purported list for a long time.
“No, no. Israel came up with nothing. No, no,” he said. “I’ve been No. 1 [on Iran’s kill list] for a long time, and it’s the way life is, you know.”
Notably, Trump swapped plans while travelling back to the United States following the NATO Summit in Ankara, with the White House later stating that it was a security tactic to ensure the president’s safety.

Meanwhile, in his message, Mojtaba Khamenei described the massive turnout witnessed at the Ali Khamenei funeral as “historic” and “enemy-breaking”.

“On this occasion, I would like to sincerely appreciate the presence of tens of millions of people in the cities and villages of Iran and Iraq, especially Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad, which is astonishing, enemy-breaking, and historic,” he said.
Ali Khamenei funeral draws millions
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former Supreme Leader who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on February 28 that sparked the Iran war and the wider West Asia conflict, was laid to rest at the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad late Thursday night as thousands of supporters gathered to pay their final farewells to the slain leader.
The final burial took place at the Dar al-Dhikr prayer hall after his coffin was carried around the holy shrine as part of the funeral rites. Khamenei’s eldest son, Mostafa Khamenei, led the funeral prayers.
