The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a notorious 57-man gang terrorising Yola, the state capital and local governments.
The spokesman for the command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, in a statement issued on Tuesday, stated that the arrest was part of the command’s sustained efforts to rid the state of criminals.
“In continuation of the command’s efforts to rid communities of criminal elements and enhance public safety, a coordinated operation was carried out in identified criminal hideouts and black spots within Jimeta and Yola Metropolises,” he said.
According to the statement, the operation, which was carried out by Divisional Police Officers under the supervision of their Area Commanders, “yielded positive results with the arrest of fifty-seven (57) suspects for offences bordering on Shilla-related activities, public nuisance, possession of dangerous weapons, and involvement with prohibited substances.
“The Adamawa State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Kabir Hassan, has sustained its aggressive fight against Shilla gangsterism, drug abuse, public nuisance, and other forms of criminality across the state.
“During the operation, police operatives recovered various weapons and suspected banned substances from the suspects. The exhibits have been documented and will be tendered as evidence in court during prosecution”.
The statement disclosed that the suspects have been charged in court in accordance with the law, pointing out that profiling and further investigations continue to determine the extent of their involvement in other criminal activities.
The CP commends the professionalism and commitment displayed by officers involved in the operation and reassures residents that the Command remains resolute in its determination to dismantle criminal gangs and restore lasting peace across the state.
The command further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting the police with credible and timely information that will aid crime prevention and detection.
