Police launch manhunt as teacher dies after alleged assault over pupil’s discipline in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a school staff member, Maryam Usman, following an alleged assault at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Oyiza Salihu, the incident was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25, 2026, as a case of culpable homicide.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that on June 18, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly stormed the school and attacked Maryam Usman, 30, over her decision to discipline a pupil.

“The victim reportedly sustained severe injuries during the assault. She was first treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for advanced medical care. She, however, succumbed to her injuries on June 25.”

Following the report, police operatives visited both the scene of the incident and the deceased’s residence to carry out preliminary investigations and documentation.

Authorities said arrangements are underway to move the corpse to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for medical examination and autopsy.

The suspects reportedly fled before the arrival of security personnel. The Police Command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend them, adding that once arrested, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and discreet investigation.

The command reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all those connected with the incident are brought to justice.
