The Police Command in Kano has warned against the increasing trend of roller skating by youth within the Kano metropolis on major highways, ongoing road construction sites, bridges, and other restricted areas.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, gave the warning in a statement issued to newsmen on Friday in Kano.
He said though roller skating is a recreational activity, when carried out on fast-moving roads, it poses a serious threat to the lives of the skaters and other road users.
“The Command notes with dismay that many juveniles are engaging in dangerous acts such as latching onto moving vehicles for speed and thrill.

“A practice that has already resulted in fatal and life-threatening injuries in other parts of the country,” he said.
He noted that the major roads were designed for vehicular movement and that roller skating on them offers limited vehicular control, which may result in accidents.
The PPRO further explained that skating on the roadway also endangers both the skaters and motorists.
“The habit of lapping onto moving vehicles for sport or pleasure exposes young skaters to severe accidents and criminal liability,” he said.

“Parents, guardians, schools and community leaders are strongly advised to caution their children and wards against this dangerous practice.
“The Police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found obstructing traffic, endangering public safety, or engaging in acts capable of causing grievous harm to themselves or others.”
He urged the public to report any reckless roller skating activity to the nearest Police Station or through the Command’s emergency lines.(NAN) www.nannews.ng
