Abia Indigenes for Equality (AIE), a group of political stakeholders in Abia North Senatorial District, has intensified calls for inclusiveness, equity, and fair representation ahead of the 2027 senatorial contest under the Labour Party (LP).
The group, in a press statement by its president, Comrade Chukwuemeka Eze, warned against the concentration of political offices within a single bloc in the state.
Eze in the statement, advocated balanced power-sharing, arguing that electoral victories are often achieved through strategic inclusiveness, fairness, and equitable distribution of opportunities among the various blocs that make up the senatorial district.
The agitation came amidst growing calls for the Abia North Senate seat to be zoned to Ohafia Local Government Area on the grounds of equity and previous political understandings within the zone.
While acknowledging Ohafia’s political influence and contributions to the development of the state, the group maintained that equity should not be viewed from a one-sided perspective but rather as a collective arrangement that accommodates all parts of Abia North.
According to Eze, the current occupation of the office of Deputy Governor of Abia State by an indigene of Ohafia LGA had further strengthened arguments for broader political balancing within the district.
AIE posited that if the senate seat was eventually ceded to Ohafia in the spirit of fairness, then other major political positions and future arrangements should naturally rotate to other blocs within Abia North, particularly Bende Federal Constituency.
The group stressed that the position was not targeted against Ohafia but was intended to promote political harmony, mutual respect, and sustainable unity among the component areas of the district.
The statement further noted that successful political parties across the country often sustain their structures through deliberate balancing of power among various regions to reduce internal tensions and strengthen electoral support, noting that LP should not be an exemption.
It insisted that no political arrangement could remain stable when key positions appeared concentrated within one bloc while others feel excluded from the wider political equation.
The group also described Bende LGA as politically strategic in determining electoral outcomes in Abia North, insisting that the area should not be overlooked in future power-sharing considerations within the party.
It urged political leaders and party stakeholders to move beyond sentiments and focus on arrangements capable of promoting peace, inclusiveness, stability, and electoral success ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement read in part, “Historically, successful political parties understand the importance of balancing power among different regions in order to strengthen unity, reduce internal tensions, and consolidate electoral support.
“No political structure can remain stable when major political positions appear concentrated within a single bloc while others feel excluded from the power-sharing arrangement.
“At the end of the day, elections are not won through division or political domination, but through unity, strategic balance, collective sacrifice, and the ability to carry every bloc along in the spirit of fairness and shared progress for Abia North.”
