A pregnant woman survived after she was kidnapped, tied up, set on fire and shot in Detroit.
Latonya Bowman was 22 when the attack happened in May 2012.
Bowman had attended a drive-in movie with her former boyfriend, Jamal Rogers. She later drove him to a house in Warren, Michigan.
Antonio Mathis confronted Bowman with a gun after they entered the garage.
He tied her hands, feet and mouth with duct tape before forcing her into the back of her vehicle.
Bowman was blindfolded and driven to a vacant area in Detroit. Her attacker poured lighter fluid on her and set her on fire.
She managed to leave the vehicle and rolled on the ground to extinguish the flames.
The attacker then shot her.
Bowman remained still and pretended to be dead until he left. She freed herself, returned to her vehicle and drove to her mother’s home.
Her mother took her to a hospital.
Doctors later delivered her baby boy through an emergency Caesarean section. Both mother and child survived. ABC News reported the details shortly after the attack.
Prosecutors said Rogers planned the attack because he did not want another child. They accused him of recruiting Mathis to carry it out.
A jury convicted Rogers and Mathis of attempted murder and conspiracy in May 2013.
A judge later sentenced both men to life in prison with the possibility of parole. CBS News confirmed the sentences.
The case recently attracted fresh attention after Latonya’s story resurfaced on social media.
