Leeds United moved up to third in the Premier League after producing an impressive performance to beat Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke’s side turned the game in their favour with a devastating spell late in the first half, scoring three times in just 14 minutes to leave Newcastle facing a difficult fightback.
Leeds punish Newcastle before the break
The hosts took the lead in the 32nd minute through a fortunate deflection. Ao Tanaka’s effort struck Sean Steur and Lewis Miley before looping into the bottom corner, leaving Lukas Hornicek with little chance.
Leeds doubled their advantage just 2 minutes and 42 seconds later. Dominic Calvert-Lewin appeared to have headed the ball into the net, but the final touch came off Jayden Bogle, with the goal credited as an own goal against Newcastle.
The Magpies were unable to regain their composure, and Leeds added a third in first-half stoppage time.
This time, Calvert-Lewin got his name on the scoresheet, calmly finishing across Hornicek to register his eighth career goal against Newcastle.
Okafor completes rout at Elland Road
Newcastle needed a strong response after the interval but instead found themselves further behind.
Substitute Noah Okafor made it 4-0 in the second half after finding the net to cap a dominant evening for the home side.
Newcastle eventually found something to celebrate when substitute Bazoumana Toure pulled one back in the 90th minute, but the goal arrived far too late to change the outcome.
The victory lifts Leeds to third place with eight points from their opening matches, putting them four points behind leaders and reigning champions Arsenal.
