The National Head of NBM of Africa, on behalf of the National Executive Council and members of the Organization worldwide, has noted with concern reports of the recent deportation of Nigerian nationals from the Republic of South Africa.
While recognizing the sovereign right of every nation to regulate its borders and enforce its immigration laws, we believe that all persons, irrespective of nationality, deserve to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect in accordance with international standards and the principles of human rights.
The relationship between Nigeria and South Africa is one of the most significant on the African continent. It is a relationship forged through a shared history, common aspirations, and a collective commitment to the advancement of Africa and its people.
Nigeria’s role in the struggle against apartheid remains a matter of historical record. Successive Nigerian governments and citizens stood firmly with the people of South Africa during their quest for freedom and democratic governance. Nigeria provided diplomatic, political, and material support to the anti-apartheid movement and consistently championed the cause of justice and equality on the global stage.
This support was not extended in anticipation of future rewards but as an expression of African solidarity and a commitment to the ideals of freedom, justice, and human dignity. Those same ideals should continue to define and strengthen relations between our two nations today.
NBM of Africa acknowledges the valuable contributions of South African investments to the Nigerian economy. Companies such as MTN and several other South African enterprises have established significant business interests in Nigeria, creating employment opportunities and contributing to economic development. Their presence reflects the potential benefits of economic cooperation among African nations.
However, true partnership must be founded upon mutual respect, reciprocity, and the protection of citizens of both countries. Nigerians living, working, studying, and conducting lawful businesses in South Africa should enjoy the same respect and protection that South African citizens and businesses receive in Nigeria.
We therefore urge the Governments of Nigeria and South Africa to continue constructive diplomatic engagement with a view to addressing concerns affecting their citizens and strengthening bilateral relations. Dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding remain the most effective tools for resolving challenges between friendly nations.
We also call upon Nigerians residing abroad to remain law-abiding, maintain proper immigration documentation, and conduct themselves in ways that project the positive values, resilience, and enterprise for which Nigerians are known throughout the world.
Africa’s future lies not in division, suspicion, or hostility but in cooperation, integration, and shared prosperity. Nigeria and South Africa, as two of Africa’s most influential nations, must continue to provide leadership in advancing these objectives for the benefit of present and future generations.
