Retired security officers launch community safety initiative in Kano

A group of retired military personnel, police officers, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), paramilitary officers and senior civil servants in Kano have formed an association aimed at strengthening peace and security across the state.

The group, operating under the name Retired Military, Police, DSS, Paramilitary and Senior Civil Servants – Kano for UM, said the initiative is non-partisan and focused on supporting efforts to protect the lives and property of residents, regardless of religion or ethnic background.

In a statement issued on Friday, the chairman of the association, Col. Yusuf Maitama Aminu (rtd) said members of the group, despite being retired from service, remain committed to complementing the work of security agencies in the state.

According to him, the association is legally registered and has begun advocacy visits to major security institutions, including the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, with plans to extend engagement to traditional and religious institutions.

SolaceBase reports that the association identified social challenges such as thuggery, drug abuse, internally displaced persons, street children and youth restiveness as major concerns requiring urgent intervention. It said tackling these issues is among its top priorities in supporting government and community efforts to improve security.

The group also called on philanthropists, community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations and government agencies to collaborate in achieving what it described as a “Better Kano” through collective action against crime and social disorder.

The chairman assured residents that members of the association would deploy their wealth of experience and professional networks in both preventive and responsive measures to enhance public safety and social welfare across the state.
