Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been named recipient of the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Award USA, with the governor set to receive the honour in Washington D.C. on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Sanwo-Olu will also deliver a keynote address on positioning Lagos State, Africa’s largest sub-national economy, to diaspora communities as part of efforts to attract investment into urban infrastructure, finance and the state’s pipeline of investment-ready projects.
The Lagos State Government disclosed this in a post on its official X account, stating that the award followed a rigorous selection process that recognised the developmental strides recorded in the state under Sanwo-Olu’s leadership.
According to a letter delivered by the Board of Directors of the Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF), the award was conferred on the governor in recognition of his achievements and the transformation witnessed across Lagos.
“The Board has unanimously resolved to confer upon His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu one of the most prestigious honours bestowed under the auspices of the Foundation – the Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Award USA,” the letter stated.
The award is being presented under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene of Kumasi, who will personally confer the honour on Sanwo-Olu alongside Her Royal Highness Lady Julia, Queen Consort.

The Millennium Excellence Awards USA recognises individuals of African heritage and global contributors whose contributions have made significant impacts in areas including business, science, arts, philanthropy and public service.
The award ceremony will take place at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C., with the red carpet scheduled to commence at 2:30 p.m.
Beyond receiving the award, Sanwo-Olu is expected to participate in several sessions at the event, including “Government Addresses: The Political Will Behind the Deal,” plenary sessions and roundtable discussions.
The engagements are expected to focus on strengthening economic and social ties between Lagos State and members of the diaspora, while creating opportunities for greater collaboration and investment.
The governor’s keynote address will specifically highlight investment opportunities in Lagos, with emphasis on urban infrastructure, finance and other projects identified as investment-ready by the state government.
