Scotland moved to the top of Group C after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Haiti in Boston, ending a 36-year wait for a win at the FIFA World Cup.
A first-half goal from John McGinn proved decisive as Steve Clarke’s side collected three important points in their opening match of the tournament.
The victory marked Scotland’s first World Cup triumph since defeating Sweden at Italia 90.
Scotland’s success was made even more significant after Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the group, leaving the Scots in a strong position ahead of tougher tests against both nations.
McGinn delivers historic moment
McGinn scored the only goal of the game in the 28th minute, rewarding Scotland’s positive start against a Haiti side that remained dangerous throughout the contest.
Reflecting on the victory, the Aston Villa midfielder revealed the mindset that inspired his performance.
“These opportunities don’t come around too often,” McGinn said.
“We’ve said before at major tournaments, did we bring our best? Did we leave the tournament saying we could have done more or we could have shown more?”
He added: “That’s what I tried to bring to the game tonight. Sometimes things didn’t come off but I promised myself driving up to the stadium that I would be positive and try things. If they didn’t come off, get the ball and try it again.”
While Scotland created opportunities, they were forced to defend resolutely in the closing stages as Haiti searched for an equaliser.
Clarke praises resilience
Scotland manager Steve Clarke admitted the performance was not perfect but was delighted with the result.
“I just said to the captain there, Andy Robertson, it’s about time we won a game in the group stage!” Clarke said.
“We probably put the supporters through it a little bit. Everyone said, ‘must-win game’. We won the game.”
The coach also praised his players’ defensive commitment, adding: “If teams let them play, but if they have to dig in and show that character and that resilience, that’s what they do as well.”
The victory gives Scotland a dream start to their campaign and boosts hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
