Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh has exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following internal problems and court cases affecting the party.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that he made this known during an interview on Arise News, where he said he resigned from the party on May 1, 2026, and has now joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Umeh explained that his decision was driven by the need to protect the goal of building a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the coalition formed within the ADC had earlier raised hope among Nigerians who wanted a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He, however, said the situation changed after some members began actions that weakened the party from within. According to him, internal disputes were taken to court, which created tension and slowed down the progress of the coalition.
The senator said the ongoing legal battles and disagreements made it difficult for the party to move forward with its plans. He added that the crisis brought uncertainty and affected efforts to build a stable opposition platform.
Umeh noted that his move to the NDC is aimed at finding a more stable environment where opposition leaders can work together without distractions. He said the new platform offers a better chance to organise and prepare for the next elections.
He said: “I have resigned from the ADC since the 1st of May. I am moving to the NDC.
“The ADC coalition came with a lot of hope, and Nigerians celebrated, but some members made themselves willing tools to destabilise the party and went to court.”
