Vice-President Kashim Shettima has asked Nigerians not to buy gifts or spend money to celebrate his 60th birthday, urging them instead to channel such resources towards charity and people in need.
Shettima made the appeal in a message published on Tuesday night, ahead of his birthday on Wednesday.
The Vice-President said turning 60 had strengthened his resolve to discourage birthday gifts and material celebrations in his honour.
According to him, reaching the milestone should be a time for reflection, gratitude and giving rather than accumulation.
He urged friends, supporters, associates and well-wishers across the country to donate to a charity, cause or individual of their choice instead of spending money on birthday gestures.
“Every hand that lifts another somewhere in Nigeria tomorrow will be a candle lit for me,” he said.
Shettima also appealed for prayers for himself and Nigeria, particularly for peace, prosperity, wise leadership and the realisation of the country’s potential.
He expressed gratitude for the goodwill, friendship and prayers he had received throughout the years, saying no one reaches a significant stage in life solely through personal effort.
The Vice-President said Nigerians had a duty to extend kindness to others, particularly those who might never be able to repay them.
He also described Nigeria’s youthful population, cultural diversity, entrepreneurial spirit and capacity for fellowship across differences as some of the country’s greatest assets.
Shettima concluded by wishing Nigerians long life, good health, fulfilment and “the quiet joy of being useful to someone who may never be able to repay you.”
