Tata Group news: Noel Tata to retire due to…, who will replace the man responsible for making Trent and Voltas a huge success

Major leadership transition could soon take place within the Tata Group as Noel Tata approaches the age of 70. As per the group’s long-standing retirement policy, executives usually step down from executive roles at 65 and retire from non-executive board positions at 70. Noel Tata is set to turn 70 in November this year, raising discussions around succession planning within several Tata companies.

Who is Noel Tata

Currently, Noel Tata serves as Non-Executive Director and Chairman of companies such as Tata Investment Corporation, Tata International, Trent and Voltas. He is also Vice Chairman and Non-Executive Director at Titan Company and Tata Steel. According to reports citing sources, discussions are already underway regarding possible successors for some of these positions.

When did he come into power?

Following the death of Ratan Tata in October 2024, Noel Tata was appointed Chairman of Tata Trusts. Unlike Tata Group companies, Tata Trusts does not have a fixed retirement age for its chairman or trustees. Noel Tata had earlier stepped away from executive roles within the group after turning 65. However, he continues to remain deeply involved in the group through non-executive and trustee responsibilities.

What are his contributions?

Several Tata companies witnessed strong growth during Noel Tata’s tenure. He became Chairman of Trent in April 2014 after the retirement of F.H. Kavarana. Since then, the company’s revenue has grown nearly nine times. In FY25, Trent reported a net profit of Rs 1,477 crore, compared to a loss of Rs 19 crore in 2014. During the same period, the company’s shares delivered nearly 3,500% returns to investors. Similarly, Noel Tata took over as Chairman of Voltas in August 2017. The company’s revenue rose from Rs 6,404 crore in FY17 to Rs 15,737 crore in FY25. Net profit also increased from Rs 578 crore to Rs 841 crore. Voltas shares have gained around 151% since he became chairman.

Helped in building retail business

One important thing about Noel Tata is that he quietly helped build the Tata Group’s retail business into a major success story. He played a big role in expanding Trent through popular brands like Westside and Zudio. Unlike many corporate leaders, Noel Tata has mostly stayed away from the spotlight and is known for his calm and low-key working style.

Tata group preparing for next phase

The possible leadership reshuffle comes at a crucial time for the Tata Group. Several group companies are preparing for major capital expenditure plans and expansion projects. Industry watchers believe any future changes in leadership could significantly shape the direction of Tata Group’s consumer-facing businesses in the coming years.
