Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has claimed that Peter Obi weakened his chances of winning the 2027 presidential election after leaving the African Democratic Congress for the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Fayose made the comment during an interview on TVC News’ Politics Tonight while assessing the strength of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the former governor, opposition politicians had a stronger chance of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress when they were united under the ADC.
Fayose explains why Obi’s chances changed
Fayose said Obi’s decision to leave the ADC marked a turning point in his political prospects.
He said, “When they were all together in ADC, I would tell anybody that they will make an impact. The day Obi left ADC for NDC, that day Obi lost.”
Despite his criticism, Fayose described the former Anambra State governor as “a fantastic Nigerian who has made his marks, who has shown that things can get better.”
He argued that the opposition’s inability to remain united would continue to affect its electoral prospects, adding that it was now too late for the politicians to reverse their decisions.
Fayose predicts Tinubu’s 2027 prospects
Fayose also said President Bola Tinubu currently had an advantage in the South-West, projecting that he could secure about four million votes from the region based on the 2023 voting pattern.
He further predicted that Tinubu could win about 65 per cent of the vote in the 2027 election.
The former governor also criticised claims surrounding vote-buying during the Osun governorship election, saying electoral malpractice was a systemic problem requiring collective responsibility.
