Two women lost their lives on Thursday evening after they were struck by a truck while attempting to cross the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The fatal accident occurred at about 6:31 p.m. at Car Park C Outbound in the Mowe-Ibafo axis of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
According to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), a white Mini Howo truck with registration number AKR 201 XD knocked down the pedestrians as they tried to cross the busy highway.
Emergency responders from TRACE, the Ogun State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (OGSEMSAS), the Amotekun Corps and the Redeemed Police Motor Traffic Division arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident.
TRACE disclosed that the truck was occupied by three persons-one man and two women, all of whom escaped unhurt.
One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second woman succumbed to her injuries while being transported to Redeemed Hospital by OGSEMSAS personnel. Medical officials later confirmed both deaths and deposited their remains in the hospital morgue.
Rescue officials managed traffic around the crash site and secured the area, while the truck was recovered and towed away by officers of the Redeemed Police Motor Traffic Division.
The incident caused partial disruption to traffic flow along the expressway before normal movement was restored following the clearance of the scene.
Police authorities have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Meanwhile, road safety officials renewed calls for pedestrians to make use of designated crossing points when navigating the expressway, stressing the dangers of crossing high-speed highways outside approved locations.
