US President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric over the Strait of Hormuz, declaring the strategic waterway a “new US territory” amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Trump made the declaration on Tuesday in a graphic posted on Truth Social, his social media platform, identifying the Strait of Hormuz as a “NEW U.S. Territory”.

The graphic was subsequently shared by the official White House account on X.

It featured a map of the Strait of Hormuz highlighted in blue, with a circle around the narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The words “NEW U.S. Territory” were prominently displayed across the image.

The declaration came days after Trump suggested that the United States could take control of the strategic waterway following the defeat of Iran.

Addressing a political rally in New York State on Friday, Trump said, “After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated — pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States.”

“It’s true,” he added.

Trump had earlier described the proposal as “a great idea” and “an excellent idea”, citing the presence of US naval forces in the region and the ongoing blockade.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, with about 20 per cent of global oil and gas supplies typically transported through the waterway.
