US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned Iran that military action could resume if Tehran fails to “behave” after a preliminary agreement expected to be signed in Switzerland.
Speaking alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during the G7 Summit, Trump said the understanding between the two sides was not a final deal but only a memorandum of understanding.
“No, it’s not final. It’s a memorandum of understanding,” Trump said, referring to the agreement that is expected to be signed on Friday.
He added that the United States could return to military action if it is not satisfied with the outcome.
Trump says strikes could resume if agreement fails
Trump said that if Iran does not follow the terms of the understanding, the United States would “go back to shooting at them” and resume bombing operations.
“If they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs,” Trump said, adding that Iran had “misbehaved for 47 years.”
His remarks referred to the Islamic Republic, which was established following the 1979 Islamic Revolution that removed the US-backed Shah of Iran from power.
Israel-Iran conflict began in February
The conflict between Israel and Iran began on February 28 after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on several targets inside Iran. The strikes reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials, triggering a major escalation in tensions.
In response, Iran carried out missile attacks on Israeli targets, leading to months of fighting between the two sides. The conflict raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East and affected global oil markets. Since then, several countries have pushed for a diplomatic solution.
Following recent negotiations, the United States and Iran are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding in Switzerland, after which talks on a final peace settlement will begin and continue for 60 days.
